Aqua Organic cosmetics products impress not only because of their high quality organic ingredients but also because of their minimalist look and feel. The product name consists of a single letter, while the exterior of the packaging is clean and uncluttered. Another unusual feature is the way letter is printed across the edge of the folding box.

Clearly defined specifications for cosmetics line and its presentation

"The Aqua Medical Spa opened in 2008," says Bernd Schmidt, CEO of Aqua Organic. "We looked around for a suitable natural cosmetics line for the spa's cosmetics department but were not convinced by anything on the market at that time. Many were too oily; some lines were just too big, or their priorities were not the same as ours. My partner Dr. Lars-Peter Kuhr and I eventually realised that we would have to develop and produce our own range of cosmetics. That was when Aqua Organic was born, in 2009.

Right from the outset, Lars-Peter Kuhr and Bernd Schmidt firmly believed that the unique characteristics of their products would have to be reflected in their presentation and packaging. They believed their customers had a right to transparency, particularly when it came to ingredients. They refused to use unnecessary fillers in their cosmetic products and applied the same principle to product presentation. Consequently, Aqua Organic offers unisex products only. The various products have unambiguous names. Solitary, bold letters, like "F" for fluid or "S" for serum, locate each product within the company's classification system and define its intended purpose.

"Having decided what we wanted, we set out to find a cardboard box manufacturer," says Bernd Schmidt. "Ebro Color responded to our inquiry promptly and efficiently and soon sent us samples that complied with our specifications. These gave us a good idea of how our finished packaging would look."

It's all about the content! This truth of this statement becomes clear as soon as you open the package. Packaging looks more expensive when it is made from a combination of different materials, as is the case here.

At Aqua Organic less is more

Aqua Organic and Ebro Color arrived at the current packaging solution – the one that received the Red Dot Design Award in 2013 – via an intermediate step. German Brodbeck, CEO of Ebro Color explains, "At first we used coated board for the folding cartons. We printed a green stalk over a neutral-coloured board. After about a year, however, we realised that this solution did not completely deliver the value proposition and image that the customer was hoping for. So we moved to an unbleached board with a pure white uncoated finish."

The current packaging, with its pure white exterior and understated black lettering, provides a surprising contrast to its bold green interior. The uncoated box feels soft to the touch and has an air of total freshness. The judges of the Red Dot Design Awards found the packaging to be both attractive and memorable, a view shared by the company's customers. The green interior tells the customer in no uncertain terms that what really matters is the content: the ingredients.

Before switching to the current design, Aqua Organic carried out some field research. In order to find the right packaging for the product, they interviewed customers and carried out a survey of the company's employees. The feedback on the revised design was positive: it succeeded in conveying the desired message much more effectively.

"We set out to give our range of cosmetics a distinctive, modern look," says Bernd Schmidt. "Until just a few years ago, natural cosmetics for women had a very unsophisticated image. That was our impression anyway. But organic cosmetics resonate with today's consumers, who are serious about what they use to cleanse their body. Less is often more. So why should our packaging not appeal to the zeitgeist too?"

Aqua Organic now supplies hotels, day spas, beauty salons and selected perfumeries as well as its in-house spa. Customers know where they stand, thanks to the clear, minimalist design of the company's personal care products. This can be seen, for example, in the brand's recognition value, says Bernd Schmidt. The individual letters that form the name of each product are large and extend across the edges of the packaging. The bold styling is not limited to the exterior packaging but is carried through to the brand's jars and bottles. There is no need for the consumer to rack their brains to remember the name of the product they want to buy – and no endless searching through the shelves of the beauty supply store.

Bernd Schmidt is enthusiastic about his long-standing collaboration with Ebro Color. "When we began looking for a manufacturer for our packaging over six years ago, we wanted a partner we could rely on for the long term. Ebro Color definitely fits that description."
